In August, I volunteered at the UC Alumni Career Fair.  The annual event was planned and organized by staff representing all 10 alumni associations for the UC Colleges in California.

It started 4 years ago and rotates locations to serve all of California.  This year it was held in Orange County.  There were about 1900 alumni registered to attend.

It was the first large, professional networking event that I’ve attended in person since the pandemic.

What a great event!

The organizers had a purpose to connect alumni from early to mid-stage career with employers, offer skills and knowledge sets to support alumni professional journeys, provide networking opportunities, socialize and have fun.

With the positive energy that filled the rooms, I would say they accomplished their mission!

So, what was my takeaway after attending this event?

Two things come to mind.

Build Your Network

It is never too early or too late to grow your professional network. And it offers numerous benefits that can significantly enhance your career.

Here are some key advantages:

  1. Access to Opportunities: networking can open doors to new job opportunities, partnerships and projects.
  • Knowledge Sharing: engaging with peers allows for the exchange of insights, best practices, and industry knowledge.
  • Professional Development: Networking helps you discover courses, webinars, and other resources to refine your skills and stay updated with industry trends.
  • Increased Visibility: Being active in professional communities increases your visibility and can help you stand out to potential employers or collaborators.
  • Support System: A strong network provides emotional support, advice, and guidance as you navigate your career.
  • Enhanced Reputation: Regularly interacting with professionals in your field can build your credibility and reputation.
  • Creative Inspiration: Networking can inspire new ideas and perspectives, helping you think creatively and solve problems more efficiently.
  • Referrals and Recommendations: Building relationships with other professionals may generate leads for referrals, recommendations, and introductions with centers of influence.

Engage with Your Alumni Association

Alumni associations are formed around educational institutions – think school spirit and school pride!   They are often rooted in reciprocity with the goal of supporting graduates in their careers.   Alumni can be great champions and eager to be helpful to people who are part of their network.

Alumni Associations offer opportunities for people to get connected in person and online.   Become an active participant and start building solid relationships within your alumni association.

Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

Attend Events: Participate in alumni events such as reunions, networking mixers, and guest lectures.

Join Online Communities: Many alumni associations have online platforms or social media groups where you can connect with other members.

Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to help organize events or support association initiatives.  If you are a seasoned professional, serve as a mentor. Share your knowledge and help the next generation of young workers who are eager for advice and guidance.

Stay Updated:  Subscribe to newsletters and follow the association’s social media channels to stay informed about news, events, and opportunities.

Participate in Webinars and Workshops: Engage in professional development opportunities like webinars and workshops offered by the association.

Network Actively: Make an effort to connect with alumni in your field or industry.
